Kate Aldridge writes : After much anticipation and a pitch inspection later, Twickenham Ladies were given the go ahead to travel to Guildford, who lay host to this week's league game. A variety of forecasts hinted at an afternoon of rain however, unlike the previous weekend, the ladies were able to see this one out!
Following winning the toss, skipper Sarai Knight opted to bat first. Despite the ladies' confident and well-structured warm-up, we ended up all out at 25 overs for 63, with Guildford winning by 9 wickets.
Unfortunately, the ladies got off to a shaky start, with Guildford taking 3 wickets in the first four overs! However, Jessica Lee handled coming on earlier than anticipated exceptionally well; the partnership with Sunny Pottay creating a distinct change in momentum for the away side. The ladies were blindsided by an attempted mankading of our solid batsman, Sunny, despite being found not out. It must be noted that no warning was given! There was a little bit of teasing the opposition with some of our balls but it was great to see the ladies seeking the boundaries!
Twickenham ladies demonstrated exemplary behaviour when fielding; clapping in worthy shots from the opposition, keeping the on-field conversation to that which was necessary; it was a shame that the standard of etiquette wasn't wholly reciprocated.
As mentioned previously, the away side put in a good shift, with another nod toward Jess, who staved off a few boundaries. Another mention should go towards Katie Martin-Fagg , who debuted as a wicket keeper, at short notice and held strong, taking to the position naturally and not allowing a single bye!
There were many positives that Twickenham Ladies will take away from this game, alongside a few lessons for the developing side. Overall it was en enjoyable match, and a privilege to play on such well-tended grounds!
