The Tornadoes kicked off their competitive season with an early start at Shepperton. Sarai Knight lost the toss and Twickenham were put in to bat.
Ruth Fraser and Angela Clark opened the batting for the Tornadoes. After a strong first over from Shepperton, Ruth was unfortunate to hole out to Carys Morgan for a score of 2. Nerida Lloyd joined Angela at the crease and the two set about building a challenging total. A strong partnership of 51 runs took the Tornadoes to the 11th over and a promising run tally. It was then that disaster struck, with Nerida getting run out for 14, and Angela going down with a nasty looking injury in the process.
With Angela retired hurt on 21* and Nerida back in the clubhouse, Sophie Nicholas and Katie Martin-Fagg were the two new batters at the crease. KMF started strongly and dominated the strike, but Sophie couldn't make an impact and was out for a duck. Sarai joined KMF at the crease and the two carried on the efforts of Angela and Nerida. KMF carried on her fine form and plundered 30*, with support from Sarai finishing on 8* to register a total at the close of 107-3 from 16 overs.
Once more into the breach went Twickenham, with Priti Dey and Ruth Fraser opening the bowling. Priti put on a fine display and was unfortunate not to get a wicket, with figures of 0-7 from 4 overs with 1 maiden. On her first spell since the 2021 season, Ruth was rewarded with 1-18 after her first 4 overs and at the change of ends, Shepperton were well behind the rate on 26-1. Sophie Nicholas and Sarai Knight came on to bowl and earned themselves a wicket apiece, with figures of 1-32 and 1-25 respectively. Despite a fine 27* from 15 deliveries, captain Chrissy Rapley couldn't lead her team to victory. Shepperton managed 83-3 from their allotted 16, and Twickenham emerged the victors.
A fine and encouraging start to the competitive season with a well-rounded team performance. Onwards and upwards!
