Sandhu inspries Shropshire to QF success - on one leg!

Twickenham's Gurjit Sandhu keeps his nerve to see Shropshire past Norfolk

I've always felt running between the wickets was an over-rated experience
- Gurjit Sandhu

Our very own Gurjit Sandhu was slap, bang in the centre of the action as Shropshire made it past Norfolk and in to the semi-finals of the Unicorns Trophy last Sunday.

For those not up to speed on minor counties cricket, the Unicorns Trophy is the premier limited overs competition that non-first class counties battle in. Gurjit's Shropshire side had already dumped out Herefordshire and a strong Staffordshire team in previous rounds before being asked to make the long trek from the West Midlands over to the Fens of Norfolk.

247 to win
Norfolk took first hit and Gurjit wasted little time getting in to the action, bowling one of the openers for 9. A 63 from the other opener, Jordan Taylor, nonetheless set the hosts up nicely, and with 247 needed to win it was game on. Gurjit's figures of 2-36 off 10 stood up pretty well (see here for the full card).

But it was with the bat that the drama really developed. Shropshire seemed to be cruising at 190-3 but an unseemly collapse saw them slip to 213-7. Serious work needed to be done. Step up wicket keeper Simon Gregory and Gurjit.

Given that Gurj had bowled a tough spell earlier in the day he decided that he couldn't be bothered with all that running nonsense, so he promptly called for a runner from the pavilion. The official line is that he hurt his leg going for a quick single, but I think we all know otherwise. "I'll just deal in boundaries, no big deal" he's murmured to have said to skipper Steve Leach as the game developed in to a pulsating finish.

Gurj promptly plundered three boundaries, whilst Gregory and Gurj's runner managed to scamper through for some quick singles. Shropshire subsequently got home with three balls to spare.

Magnificent stuff, Gurj, and best of luck in the semi-final (which will take place on 1 July, see here).
